Morris Marina - the worst car ever built?

The Morris Marina, produced by British Leyland from 1971 to 1980, is one such car that has been labeled by some as the worst vehicle ever built. An interesting read. I've seen a few Marinas recently and chatted with their owners. They like the simplicity, and the basic design and equipment compared with modern cars, When driving your Marina, you feel you've gone back to a slower, less frantic age. In one word - nostalgia!

A pretty balanced review of a much derided motor car.

It was definitely a simple car from a different era, but an era some of us still remember. I certainly recall my families first (and only) Marina. In many ways it started the fascination that I still have with British cars and the British motor industry.
While my school friends parents drove Vauxhall's, Ford's and Chrysler's, I defended British Leyland and our Marina with as much enthusiasm as I could muster!

As a top of the range HL model from 1976 with vinyl roof and Jade Green paintwork it actually looked great. The 1.8 B-series 'twin carb' engine from the MGB gave it some great performance too - until you came to a bend and its Morris Minor suspension started to struggle.
Yes there were quality issues - the gearbox failed in under 12 months, the exhaust started blowing and the speedo cable clicked continuously making the dial wobble alarmingly. But those were the sort of issues you could get on any new car then - just that they were more common if your car came from the Leyland Cars stable. Great Cars and a Great Deal More as the cinema ads used to tell us!
