Should classic cars be electrified?

Classic cars hold a special place in the hearts of many enthusiasts. From the iconic styling to the nostalgic feelings they evoke, classic cars are an important part of motoring history. However, as the world becomes more environmentally conscious, the trend towards electrification is gaining momentum. This raises the question: should classic cars be electrified?
To answer this question, it is essential to understand the advantages and disadvantages of electric cars compared to traditional gasoline-powered cars. Electric cars are more environmentally friendly, producing zero emissions during operation. This is a significant advantage in a world grappling with climate change and other environmental challenges. Additionally, electric cars can be less expensive to operate and maintain in the long term, due to lower fuel costs and fewer moving parts.

On the other hand, converting classic cars to electric power can be a complex and expensive process. Classic cars were not designed for electric power, so converting them requires custom engineering and can result in significant modifications to the original vehicle. This can be seen as a sacrilege to many classic car enthusiasts who value authenticity and originality in their vehicles. Furthermore, classic cars are often treated as museum pieces, and modifying them can harm their value as collectibles.

Despite these drawbacks, there are some good reasons why classic cars should be electrified. Firstly, electric power can improve a classic car's drivability and reliability. Many classic cars suffer from mechanical and electrical issues due to their age, and an electric powertrain can offer a reliable and efficient solution. The smooth torque delivery of an electric motor can also enhance the driving experience, making a classic car more enjoyable to drive.

Secondly, converting classic cars to electric power can have a positive impact on the environment. Classic cars typically have poor fuel economy and high emissions, contributing to air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. Converting them to electric power can drastically reduce their impact on the environment, making them a greener option for enthusiasts who want to enjoy their classic cars without contributing to climate change.

Perhaps the most compelling reason for electric conversion is to preserve classic cars for future generations. Many classic cars are approaching the end of their lifespans and will eventually become unusable due to wear and tear or changes in government regulations. Electrification can provide a way to extend the life of these vehicles, keeping them on the road for decades to come. By converting classic cars to electric power, we can preserve these pieces of automotive history for future generations to experience and appreciate.
There are several examples of classic car electrification that have been successful. For example, the iconic Volkswagen Beetle has been converted to electric power, offering a modern twist on a classic design. The Electric GT company has also converted a classic Porsche 911 to electric power, resulting in a car with over 450 horsepower and a 0-60 time of under 4 seconds. These conversions demonstrate the possibilities of electric power in classic cars, showcasing the performance benefits and unique driving experience that can be achieved through electrification.

Another example of successful conversion is the Revolt electric Mustang. The project started with a 1968 Mustang Fastback, and after two years of work, it resulted in a vehicle that offers similar performance to a modern Mustang GT. The vehicle has a range of up to 150 miles, a top speed of 120 miles per hour, and a 0-60 time of just over 3 seconds. It is a prime example of how electric power can breathe new life into classic cars, enhancing their performance while preserving their original styling.

Despite these success stories, it's worth noting that not all classic cars are ideal candidates for electrification. Some classic cars have unique styling cues that are part of their aesthetic appeal, and modifying them to accommodate an electric powertrain can detract from their overall design. Additionally, some classic cars have limited space for batteries, which can impact their range and performance. In such cases, converting these cars to electric power may not be the best option.

In conclusion, should classic cars be electrified? The answer is not straightforward and varies depending on the specific vehicle and the owner's priorities. On the one hand, the modifications required for electrification can harm a classic car's value as a collectible, and some classic car enthusiasts are hesitant to alter their vehicles' original design. On the other hand, electrification offers several benefits, including improved drivability, reliability, and environmental impact, as well as the opportunity to preserve classic cars for future generations. The decision to electrify a classic car ultimately comes down to the owner's personal preference, but it's worth considering the potential benefits and drawbacks before making a decision.

I own both v8 and a v12 classic cars and would certainly not consider changing their sweet rumbling sounds to the muted hum of an electric motor
I also have concerns as to the environmental damage caused from the mining of the lithium for batteries and manufacturing processes for all the other electrical components versus the few miles per year that most classics do
The cost of conversion is also prohibitive to a lot of people and can be far in excess of the vehicles worth
I think the attention should be focused on countries that are still building coal fired power stations

There may come a time when suitable fuels for classic cars are no longer available or are very costly. That will be the time to convert to electric power if the car is still to be used.

However, there may be alternative solutions to the problem of fueling the cars that are developed in the mean time, so don't rush to install batteries now as they may not be needed after all.

In the UK, would not this level of modification require the re-registration under the rules attached to changes to vehicles by the Ministry of Transport? This would mean the car would most likely get a Q plate.

Ripping out the heart of most classics -- their engine and drivetrain -- can hardly be considered "preserving" them. Sure, you have the bodies and interiors -- but what makes them classic is gone. It's like replacing the strings, hammers, and soundboard of a 1920s Steinway with the sound modules from, say, aYamaha keyboard. When done it may LOOK like a Steinway, hell it may even sound better than a Steinway, but everything that makes a Steinway a Steinway is gone. Same thing with classics.
