Brits Abroad - Celebrating British classic cars in Australia

Huge thanks to Craig, Pat, Barry and Ray for sharing their Brits Abroad with us.

Craig Bromley

Hi I’m Craig and I am nearly 54 years young 😃 I have lived in Tasmania all my life and live in the beautiful Tamar Valley and my home is fronted onto the Tamar River, a beautiful estuary in the north.

I have had a love for English cars since I was small. My parents owned Triumph Heralds & 2000s, Hillmans, A30s etc. My first car in the 80s was a Hillman Hunter Royal 660 that I wish I still had.

In early September I found in the south of Tasmania a Triumph Herald convertible ( originally a saloon ) 1964 1200. After much pleading to my wife I finally picked it up and couldn’t be happier. It has bought back so many memories from my childhood. I am currently fixing a few small issues and will hopefully have it on the road by early October. Can’t wait to go on weekend drives and eventually some rallies etc. thank you all enjoy my Herald.

Pat Hand

I emigrated from Water Orton Warwickshire in April 1975.

The A40 UTE (Utility/Pick up) is the same year and model i used to drive at the body shop i worked at.

The A40 has had a total off-chassis restoration and has won many Best in Class at car shows.

Barry Cooper

I left the U.K. In 1972 at the age of 21. Have owned Bristol 400s since 1984, now on my fourth.

Had my first Healey 3000 in the U.K. In 1970 my current one for the last 12 years.

Ray Wilkins

Arrived in Oz in late 1973 on a (supposed) working holiday. I worked at P&O in London and was tired of so many Aussies and Kiwis having a good time. I thought to turn the tables.

However, I met an Aussie Sheila, got snagged and the rest is history. Even after nearly 50 years I've not taken up Oz citizenship; just lazy really. Almost always had English cars; Austin 1800, Triumph 2500 PI, then Rovers.

In between had Holdens as company cars so they don't count. Had a 1976 Rover V8 P6B and sorry I sold her but I now have a 1958 Rover P4 105S. Lovely car all wood and leather and a wondefully smooth drive. A true car from an era when quality was the norm (pre BL).
