We were at the NEC for the Practical Classics Restoration Show 2024 and we're keen to share the best of the best with you! Starting with a quick look at our club stand, we go on walkabout around the entire show to bring you the best cars, the best displays and the most interesting exhibits. Written by Dave Youngs, Partnerships Director for Peter James Insurance. It’s been a fantastic start to the Spring for us as we plan out all the events that the Peter James Insurance team will be present at throughout the summer months as a new season gets underway. It was great to see the Enthusiasts of British Motor Vehicles team at the Practical Classics Restoration Show last month and, as usual, there was a great range of cars on display. One of the questions I get asked the most about insurance is around the retention of the salvage if your pre’85 classic is written off. There are lots of myths, and inaccuracies around how this works out, should the unthinkable happen to your treasured classic. What do we mean by Salvage Retention?Firstly, we should define what it means when your car is a write-off, sometimes referred to as a total loss. This is where your vehicle has been damaged beyond economic repair or deemed not safe to be driven again. It is the engineer who inspects the car after the accident that determines this and the category of loss. If you’ve used the Enthusiasts of British Motor Vehicles Insurance offer, your policy includes FREE salvage retention which means that you retain the vehicle should it be deemed a ‘write-off’. In this case, you would receive a full settlement and retain the vehicle’s salvage with no deduction, other than policy excess.
Many other classic insurance brokers also advertise ‘salvage retention’ in their marketing. It is not until you examine the policy details that you see that this is just an option to purchase the salvage in the event of a total loss. Salvage can typically cost up to 35% of the vehicle’s pre-accident agreed value so the Peter James offer of FREE salvage is a generous one! There are four categories of insurance classification following an accident and these have been updated in recent years. The first two allow you to retain the salvage, these are:

Written by Paul Sweeney. Held on the first Sunday of every month, lovely summer weather brought out the classic car fraternity in droves to the meet at Perfume Point last weekend and I was there - Go Pro in hand - to film some of the British, American and European cars that caught my eye. The team at Peter James Insurance will also handle all aspects of administering the scheme. Designed exclusively for our members, Enthusiasts of British Motor Vehicles Insurance provides access to a range of benefits that are included in each policy at no additional charge. Why choose Enthusiasts of British Motor Vehicles Insurance? Policy benefits can include*:
What does free salvage retention mean? Few of us ever consider what would happen to our treasured classic in the event of a total loss. Maybe we just assume that we’d be paid out the value and that would be the end of it, and with most insurance companies this would likely be the case. Sometimes you might get the opportunity to buy the car back or have the value of the salvage deducted from your settlement offer, but in most instances, it’ll get sold on at a salvage auction with the proceeds of the sale going back to the insurer to offset the pay-out. The Enthusiasts of British Motor Vehicles scheme is different. If the car cannot be economically repaired then, under the terms of your policy, you will receive the full agreed value of the car (minus any excess) PLUS you can have the salvage returned with no deduction from the settlement. This could provide a valuable supply of parts which might keep another classic on the road or you might even be able to rebuild the car yourself if you’ve the skills and available parts. The salvage retention benefits apply to all cars over 20 years old on a multi-car policy too so will cover all ages of classic car (not just pre-85’s) if you’re fortunate enough to have a collection. You’ll need to tell Peter James that you are a group member in order to have this benefit included within your policy at no additional charge. How can I get a quote?

Our final YouTube video of 2023 is now available to view. In "Classic Car Show in Napier, New Zealand - December 2023" we're back in Perfume Point, Napier for the monthly classic car meet featuring a fantastic array of British, European and American classics in addition to a few Aussie Holdens making an appearance. The weather wasn't too good this month with light rain and gloomy skies but the turnout was excellent and included some exceptional classics. Our focus was mostly on British and European classics, with particular focus on Morris Minors, a Triumph 2500, Fiat 500, VW Karmann Ghia, a pair of Jaguar E Types, several British Fords and much more. Our November video highlighting the 2023 Classic Motor Show at the NEC in Birmingham has become our most-watched video since the channel was launched two years ago. With over 3,000 views in a little over two weeks, the NEC video, "2023 NEC Classic Motor Show: the Best of the Best!" has already overtaken the previous leader, "What's it like driving and owning a Classic Mini?" which has racked up just over 2,900 views since it was first published some 18 months ago. Our appreciation goes to the team responsible for the video production - Anthony, Gar and Paul. We're very pleased with the reaction and will continue to produce more new content in 2024 - including a planned new series of interviews with members featuring their classics in detail on and off the road. Meanwhile, why not take another look at our best to date? Just click below to play the video. We are thrilled to announce that we just hit a major milestone - 500 subscribers to our YouTube channel! This is fantastic acknowledgement and reward for all those who have contributed over the last two years since we started the channel - thanks to everyone. Let's keep it going - onward and upward!
